HAMILTON – The Waterloo Region Record leads the pack of finalists for the 2010 Ontario Newspaper Awards with 17 nominations, including one that’s shared with the Hamilton Spectator and the Guelph Mercury.

The Windsor Star and the Hamilton Spectator are tied with 16 nominations a piece, including the Spectator’s shared nomination.

The Brantford Expositor and Guelph Mercury each netted seven nominations, including the Mercury’s shared nod.

The Barrie Examiner and Sarnia Observer each have four nominations.

The annual awards recognize outstanding journalism among the ONA’s 32 member newspapers.

This year, they cover 34 categories including writing, photography, design and layout, graphic arts and online journalism. That’s up from 32 categories last year.

A team of judges, representing the finest in Canadian journalism, selects up to three finalists in each category, with the winners to be announced at a gala dinner April 30 in Waterloo, Ont.

The Chatham Daily News, Ottawa Sun and Woodstock Sentinel-Review claimed three nominations a piece. The Sudbury Star, Kingston Whig-Standard, Sault Star, Peterborough Examiner, Owen Sound Sun Times, Niagara Falls Review and London Free Press each got two nominations.

The Orillia Packet and Times, Timmins Daily Press, Belleville Intelligencer, Simcoe Reformer and North Bay Nugget each got one nod.

In all, 22 newspapers are contenders for an award.

The awards began as the Western Ontario Newspaper Awards 56 years ago in Kitchener-Waterloo with only a handful of categories.

They have since grown to include most daily newspapers in the province and were renamed the Ontario Newspaper Awards to better reflect the growing membership.
