Entries are now open for the 63rd Annual Ontario Newspaper Awards.

All applicants MUST include a head shot of themselves with their entry. The picture will be used in the commemorative book for finalists and winners.

CATEGORIES INCLUDE:

Richard Sutton Award for Photojournalist of the Year

This award is given to the photographer whose portfolio is judged to be the most outstanding on the basis of subject matter, originality, technical excellence and versatility. Entrants must submit a portfolio consisting of eight to 12 prints. It must include photographs eligible for entry in all three classes of the awards — news, feature and sports. A picture-story counts as one print and may include series, essays, sequences of action.

Education reporting

Open to all ONA member news organizations, this award is given for a single story or consecutive series of up to three stories on an issue affecting Ontario schools and education. News aspect, human interest, and quality of research will be the main judging criteria.

Health and wellness writing

Open to all ONA member news organizations, this award covers a broad range of health news and wellness stories from funding cuts to the latest fad diet. Applicants can submit a single news story or a wellness feature of up to three stories on a related issue.

Social Media award

This award is given to the journalist who delivers rich, timely, content, on different social media platforms and is open to individuals working in any beat or general assignment capacity. Judges will evaluate entries built on a memo from a sponsoring editor as well as links provided to referenced social media work. Up to three screen captures may also be submitted to support entries.

Multimedia journalism

Open to both circulations this award is given for a single story or package for which the author produced photography and online elements as well as a print component. Team entries are not permitted.

Enterprise Reporting

This award is open to both circulation member papers, and will be awarded for a single story or consecutive series of up to three stories on the same subject of an investigative, analytical or interpretive nature.

Novice journalism

This award is given to a journalist, who at the time of publication of their articles, images or other productions, had less than a total of two years daily newspaper experience (including summer employment.) Entrants must submit a total of three stories or a package of submissions totaling three works of journalism such as photos or videos in any subject area.

Spot News Writing (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single story or package of up to three related stories written under pressure or deadline.

Spot News Writing (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single story or package of up to three related stories written under pressure or deadline.

Sports Writing (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given to a journalist based on a portfolio of work consisting of three published stories. Judges will consider quality of writing and reporting in submissions.

Sports Writing (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given to a journalist based on a portfolio of work consisting of three published stories. Judges will consider quality of writing and reporting in submissions.

General News Feature Writing

This award recognizes general interest news features that do not qualify as spot news but generally arise from a spot news break. An entry shall consist of up to three stories on a related subject.

Feature Writing (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single feature story or consecutive series of up to three feature stories on a related subject. Writing excellence, human interest, and quality of research will be the main judging criteria. Includes family and lifestyle writing.

Feature Writing (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single feature story or consecutive series of up to three feature stories on a related subject. Writing excellence, human interest, and quality of research will be the main judging criteria. Includes family and lifestyle writing.

Business Writing

This award is given for a single story or consecutive series of up to three stories in the fields of business, finance, or the economy.  Consecutive is not intended to mean by date. It means consecutive coverage of a certain topic.

Green Environment Writing

This award is presented to the journalist or team who research, write and present compelling content about energy conservation and/or innovation, and/or renewable energy trends, ideas or developments. Judges will consider overall effectiveness in storytelling, including non-traditional and multi-media components and presentation.

Coverage of Entertainment and the Arts

This category requires a portfolio entry of up to three articles of which at least one must be critical writing. Others may be features, commentary (including columns), personality interviews and business developments.

Editorials, Opinion and Analysis (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a related series or up to three unrelated editorials, or signed opinion or analysis articles.

This award is given for a related series or up to three unrelated editorials, or signed opinion or analysis articles.

Columnists

This award is given to a regular columnist (at least once a month) for up to three examples of writing on any subject.

Humour Writing

This award is given for a single story, feature or up to three columns.

Spot News Photography (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or package of up to three related photos produced under pressure or deadline.

This award is given for a single photo or package of up to three related photos produced under pressure or deadline.

Feature Photography (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos on the same subject.

This award is given for graphics and design, judged on the basis of originality, visual quality limited to three published pages.

Municipal Affairs Reporting (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for excellence in coverage of municipal affairs. The entry can consist of up to three stories which demonstrate the reporter’s
initiative, consistency, thoroughness and writing skill.

This award is given for excellence in coverage of municipal affairs. The entry can consist of up to three stories which demonstrate the reporter’s
initiative, consistency, thoroughness and writing skill.

Online Multimedia Special Project

This award is given to a newspaper of any size for a special project that involves a major investment of resources into a single subject. All components including text, editorials, photographs, illustrations, cartoons andgraphics may be included as part of the entry. Entries must have multimedia components such as podcasts, video, blogs or slide shows. Entries per newspaper are unlimited.

Online Photography

This award is given for a single web-only photograph, slide show or photo. Entries are limited to three per person.

Online Video Production

This award recognizes the collabortive nature of producing video for online newspaper sites. No limit per newspaper.

Martha Blackburn Award for Journalist of the Year

This award is given to the writer judged the most outstanding of all winning award entries in writing categories. No entry is required.
