Entries are now open for the 64th annual Ontario Newspaper Awards.

All applicants MUST include a head shot of themselves with their entry. The picture will be used in the commemorative book for finalists and winners.

CATEGORIES INCLUDE:

Enterprise Reporting
This award is given for a single story or consecutive series of up to three stories on the same subject of an investigative, analytic or interpretive nature.

Beat Reporting

This award is given for a portfolio entry of three to five articles that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of a single subject area with initiative, consistency, thoroughness and writing skill.

Spot News Writing (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single story or package of up to three related stories written under pressure or deadline.

Spot News Writing (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single story or package of up to three related stories written under pressure or deadline.

Arts and Entertainment Writing

This award is given for a portfolio of up to three articles, at least one of which must be critical writing. Others may be features or commentary.

General news feature

This award recognizes features that do not qualify as spot news but generally arise from a spot news break. An entry shall consist of up to three stories on a related subject.

Feature writing (over 25,000)

This award is given for a single feature story or consecutive series of up to three feature stories on a related subject.

Feature writing (under 25,000)

This award is given for a single feature story or consecutive series of up to three feature stories on a related subject.

Column/opinion writing

This award is given for a related series or up to three unrelated columns or opinion pieces on any subject.

Sports writing (over 25,000)

This award is given to a journalist based on a portfolio of work consisting of up to three published stories.

Sports writing (under 25,000)

This award is given to a journalist based on a portfolio of work consisting of up to three published stories.

Sports photography (over 25,000)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos on the same subject.

Sports photography (under 25,000)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos on the same subject.

Spot News Photography (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos produced under pressure or deadline.

Spot News Photography (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos produced under pressure or deadline.

Feature Photography (over 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos on the same subject.

Feature Photography (under 25,000 circulation)

This award is given for a single photo or a series of up to three photos on the same subject.

Video Production

This award recognizes the collaborative nature of producing video. No limit per newspaper.

Special project

This award is for a special project that involves a major investment of resources into a single subject. All print and web-related content, including videos, may be included as part of the entry. Entries per newspaper are unlimited.

Social media

This award is given to the journalist who delivers rich, timely content on different social media platforms. Judges will evaluate entries built on a memo from a sponsoring editor as well as links provided to referenced social media work.

Photojournalist of the year

This award is given to the photographer judged the most outstanding based on all finalist or winning award entries in all photo categories. No entry is required.

Journalist of the Year

This award is given to the writer judged the most outstanding based on all finalist or winning award entries in writing categories. No entry is required.
